Statement from Michael Vinay, Director of Summit County Sanitary Sewer Services, regarding the sewage backup from the storm on August 8, 2024:
“Our rain gauge at our pump station recorded nearly 5 inches of rain in 5 hours. This correlates to a 500-year storm event, which has an annual exceedance probability of 0.2 percent (a 1-500 chance of occurring in any given year).
As you know our system is a separate sanitary sewer system and not designed to convey storm flows. Additionally, no infrastructure is designed to handle such an event.
Simply put, the flow was beyond the design capacity of our facilities.”
Mayor Alonso is continuing to reach out and have conversations with County and State officials seeking relief for residents who were impacted by the storm.
